History & Architecture of Nahargarh Fort

Nahargarh Fort was built in 1734 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, the founder of Jaipur, as a retreat and defensive outpost. The fort’s name, Nahargarh (“Abode of Tigers”), is steeped in legend, and some believe it was named after Nahar Singh Bhomia, a spirit said to have haunted the hill until pacified by a temple dedicated to him inside the fort.
The fort combines Rajput military design with ornate palace-style architecture. Its robust walls extend across the Aravalli Hills, creating a natural barrier that once safeguarded Jaipur. Inside, the Madhavendra Bhawan, built by Sawai Madho Singh in the 18th century, features intricately decorated suites meant for the king and his queens. Each suite is connected by corridors adorned with murals, frescoes, and delicate latticework, reflecting both grandeur and intimacy.
